Learning and evaluation file | Portfolios in the career development classroom (POP, Explo, EN)—2 Part workshop

“The primary goal of the LEF is to connect learning and evaluation—hence its name: learning and evaluation file. When built into the learning process, evaluation is an excellent means of both learning and teaching, and plays a vital role in regulation and feedback, helping the learner to become more independent and all the while, developing competency within a specific subject area.”
(Policy on the evaluation of learning at the secondary level, p 88).
This is a hands-on 2-part workshop. Participants are required to attend the fall and spring session. The focus will be on authentic evaluation during the learning process that facilitates making a final judgment at report card time. Participants will explore what to collect throughout the term as traces of learning, how to provide evaluative feedback to students to promote competency development and how to interpret the student work samples in order to make a judgment and assign a mark. After the first session participants will leave with a task to implement the LEF with one or more students and to return to the second session with student work samples. We will also explore evaluation in the third term, which is weighted at 60% of the students’ year mark.
Topics:
Evaluation for learning
Evaluation of learning
Feedback as evaluation
Collecting a balanced amount and types of student work samples
REQUIRED:
Participants are required to attend the fall and spring session.

This full-day workshop is intended for pedagogical consultants and lead teachers associated with the above-mentioned programs. Recent changes were made to the 2011-2012 Basic School Regulation with a view to simplifying evaluation. These amendments will be reviewed. As well, participants will actively explore the following questions: What makes a good portrait of competency development? How does a teacher decide which evidence of learning is worthwhile? What is the relationship between competency development and establishing marks at specified dates during the school year?
