Matchmaker
Quiz
Type: Written |
|
Mati goes to the Career Cruising website and takes the MatchMaker quiz to begin to consider her personal profile and careers this may lead to. | Like most POP students, Mati enjoyed the MatchMaker quiz. She rushed throught he short version of the quiz and did not want to consider answering additional questions. At this time I think Mati has a fixed idea of what she wants to be in life. Throughout the POP course I will work with her to uncover her personal profile more thoroughly and see if this leads to other | Career Cruising | -- |

Personal profile | Collage reflection
Type : Resource/Image |
|
Mati discusses her personal values, strengths, interests, etc., in a small group and then creates her own personal profile, using a collage, to depict her interests. She puts words to her collage according to categories suggested by Ms. B and then writes a reflection on what she learned through the collage activity. | Mati's collage reflects her interest in the arts. She had no trouble finding representative images of herself and then putting words to explain her collage. I think she is making connections with who she is and where she sees herself. Interesting, the collage points to other personal traits, I wonder if she will follow these in a future exploration? |

Preparing or
interview with fashion expert
Type: Graphic organizer |
|
Once the plan is completed, Mati puts the steps of that plan into action by contacting her mother's cousin who is a fashion designer in the Montreal fashion district. Mati writes out her list of interview questions using the Conducting a Survey graphic organizer to guide her thoughts. and validates with a classmate and the teacher, adjusts her questions, before conducting the interview. | Mati's initial questions broke our golden rule for interviews, don't ask questions you can easily find answers to elsewhere. Mati did a good job revising her questions to be relevant and used only a few questions as a means to validate information she already had information on. | Conducting a Survey |

Proof of contact with
expert
Type: Image |
|
Mati takes a picture of the interviewee and scans her business card as proof that she made contact with an expert in the fashion industry. | Mati has tried to add to her exploration strategies by talking to an expert—after relying solely on web-based resources initially—I am pleased with her openness to try something different. | –

Mati also goes to the Web to research information and consolidates her findings using the Selecting Relevant Information graphic organizer. | Mati needed some encouragement to go and find additional information beyond her interviewed expert's information. She decided to use Google which produced too much information. A graphic organizer was suggested to help her sort through the vast amount of information she uncovered. Mati needs some future guidance with making decisions about relevant information. | Selecting relevant information | –

Teacher conference
using the Ponder evaluation checklist
Type: Checklist |
|
Near the end of the exploration Mati is asked to meet with the teacher and to evaluate her progress so far using the Ponder checklist. | We discussed reflection a lot as a class and how this is a key in the career exploration process and in the POP class. Mati is a reflective learner so she easily grasps onto new criteria for good reflection. She is starting to integrate career language into her discussions with classmates and in her written reflections. She needs to work on making closer connections between her actions and her personal profile. | Ponder checklist |

In a second, closing reflection, Mati comments on her suitability for fashion and returns to her career profile Top 20 careers list to make modifications to guide her future explorations. | Mati has started to make connections with her personal profile and her career exploration process. She is aware that she is not necessarily interested in fashion, although she admires her cousin a whole lot, and this is what influenced her initial decision towards this career. Mati was asked to consider how she could conduct her next exploration so that she could possibly experience the career she selects in a more hands on way. Her reflections are thoughtful, talking things through helps her to then put her thoughts in writing. | POP Reflection questions |
