Standards and evaluation procedures

Note: This article is a summary of information transmitted by the head of the MELS "Comité national du préscolaire", Christiane Bourdages-Simpson, and of the discussions that followed. Please refer to your school or school board policies to find out how this is being implemented in your area.

Section 96.15 of the Education Act stipulates that the principal is responsible for approving, on the proposal of the teachers, the standards and procedures for the evaluation of learning.

Many schools are currently working on the development of their Standards and procedures documents. This document will have force of law. It is imperative that Kindergarten teachers be involved in this process because the evaluation and reporting needs of the Kindergarten school community must appear on this document in order for teachers to have the flexibility they need for reporting at their level.

The current 2 day training sessions sponsored by the MELS and given by Kim McGrath address the question of evaluation and will help participants understand the specificity of pre-school education in this regard.
There are two more sessions available this year:
* May 15 & 16 Montreal
* June 12 & 13 Gatineau
Invitation were sent out to all English school boards via the "Direction Régionale". Contact your Kindergarten co-ordinator or your Director of Educational Services to apply for participation and for details of locations and times.
