Focus – Citizenship and Community Life

Involvement in action in a spirit of cooperation and solidarity
As students brainstormed and debated ideas for their project they compromised and made decisions based on consensus. They worked together in the spirit of mutual help to carry out a project related to the improvement of community life around the world.

Culture of Peace
As students publicized their project and garnered the assistance of their own community they recognized the principle of equal rights for all and took action to combat poverty and illiteracy.

Cross Curricular Competencies

Focus – To Cooperate with Others

As students made decisions, divided up the work, decided how the various activities would take place and took action, they:
- Were responsive to others and their points of view
- Participated cooperatively in classroom activities
- Carried out tasks with others according to agreed upon procedures
- Recognized which tasks could be done more effectively by teamwork

Focus – To Communicate Appropriately

- As students created posters, wrote letters, prepared speeches and created advertisements to garner support from their community and businesses they:
- Considered the purpose of their communication and their audience
- Selected appropriate modes of communication
- Observed the appropriate conventions for particular modes of communication
- Recognized the strategies they used

English Language Arts Competencies

To Read and Listen to Literary, Popular and Information-based Texts
Students read, listened to information-based texts to learn about children in need of help around the world. They responded to these texts through discussion within the context of their classroom community and further developed their personal view of the world.

To Write Self-expressive, Narrative and Information-based Texts
Students wrote letters and created posters geared to a specific audience and for a specific purpose to advertise their project and garner support.

To Represent Her/his Literacy in Different Media
Students created posters and visual representations of data to share, communicate and advertise their project as it developed.

To Use Language to Communicate and Learn
Students discussed and collaborated in class and small groups to make decisions, create action plans and continually review progress of the project as it was ongoing. Advertisements for radio broadcast were created as well.
