This Learning and Evaluation Situation (LES) was funded by the
IDC, initiated by the DEEN subcommittee of English Language Arts, and carried out by educators from
the CQSB.
1 - LA : Who Am I?
2 - LA: Begin Anchor Novel
Purpose:
Students explore how friends and foes influence who they are.
10 - CT: Character Sketch
Purpose:
Students explore how the media, and more specifically advertisers, influence who they are by tapping into and creating their new wants and needs.
12 - CT: Me, Myself, and Why
Purpose:
Students use what they have learned throughout the LES about identity and influences, to analyze who they are, and what has influenced them to become who they are.

An LES for Secondary Cycle One, Year Two

This LES assists secondary Cycle 1 students to explore self identity. Students will contribute to a mind map throughout their exploration of activities and issues such as nature vs nurture, influences of friends, and esoteric theories like numerology and astrology.
Talking to learn is the major focus of evaluation and, as the LES evolves, a media component is introduced with a writing component as the final complex task. Assessment tools such as rubrics and checklists are included.
This LES can be used in whole or in part. Text suggestions are provided for the literature circles. The text types are varied and include novels, graphic novels, magazines, articles and internet video clips.

This opening activity aims to engage the students’ interest and get them thinking about how appearances may be deceiving. Students will engage in discussion (think-pair-share) at end of activity in order to discuss their ideas.

The anchor novel is used to model reading strategies, response and to help develop students’ understanding of the codes and conventions (literary elements) of the novel.
