Mathematics Options for Cycle Two, Year Two and Three
All mathematics students in Cycle Two, Year One follow the same curriculum, however these students must select their option of mathematics courses for Cycle Two, Year Two. All three options enable students to qualify for post-secondary education. The student’s choice is best served by teachers and academic counselors within each school.
Each option is competency-based and requires students to use their knowledge to overcome challenging situations. The differences lie in the approach and context of the concepts and processes that are learned.
There are three options:
Choosing and option is an important decision for students learning. Thus it is
important for students, parents and educators to understand and choose the best option for each
student.
Science Option
(6 credits: 150 hours)
This option prepares students for pure sciences and courses which contain science prerequisites. It is intended for students that seek to understand phenomena, conduct research and experimentation in order to propose solutions and be able to communicate results.
Key components of the Science option:
- Explore mainly scientific contexts
- Understand origin of different
phenomena and how they function
- Use the ability to think and analyze models
Technical and Scientific Option
(6 credits: 150 hours)
This option prepares students for study in fields that develop more technical objects based
on scientific principles. Students pursuing this option look at situations that involve the
production of a prototype or solution
and be able to explain their decisions.
Key components in the Technical and Scientific Option:
- Explore situations that combine both manual and intellectual work
- Carry out case studies (include scientific work)
- Become familiar with instruments and technological tools
- Identify errors and anomalies and apply corrective procedures
Cultural, Social and Technical Option
(4 credits: 100 hours)
Students following this option are preparing themselves for study in a discipline towards arts, humanities and the social sciences. It is intended for students desire studying the social impact of real life problems and look to design objects or solutions related to them.
Key components of the Cultural, Social and Technical Option:
- Design objects and activities
- Debate social causes
- Become engaged citizens
