Official MEQ Program

The Secondary V chemistry program should provide young Quebecers with the background they need to continue studying sciences at the post-secondary level, and prepare them to meet the challenges of everyday life that are strongly influenced by scientific and technological discoveries. By studying chemistry, young people will be better equipped to participate in decision-making processes that will affect the future of humanity.

In order to breathe new life into chemistry courses and to make them appealing to students, educators must design programs that are in tune with the basic realities of modern society. A knowledge of science, complemented by a strong sense of ethics, is one of the key elements in a person's development and one of the major components of fundamental education. Furthermore, the cultural identity of a society can only be expressed in conjunction with some form of scientific and technological autonomy.

Consequently, when conducting scientific activities, it is important to refer to the history of science as well as current social and environmental issues. This approach is now regarded as an effective way of encouraging young people to work for change. Although secondary-level chemistry studies should prepare students for a career, they should above all motivate them to become responsible citizens of the world.
