Creating a DVD to demonstrate jump rope skills
Translated from the original French RECITDP document here:
http://www.recitdp.qc.ca/article.php3?id_article=85
This project consists of creating a DVD that can be used in the gymnasium to demonstrate jump rope skills. This DVD should be of easy access for all students to use. In addition, the various jump rope movements should be performed by several students from the class or school. This will encourage students and will contribute to their success of the skills. Therefore, different classes will be able to view the different sequences of the video, in order to acquire the various skills involved with jump rope. The students will be able to acquire the skill efficiently and quickly.
To create a successful DVD, the teacher must select a few students that can master a specific jump rope skill in front of the video camera. These skills will then be edited using a video editing program. Finally, the short video will be recorded on a blank DVD. This video will then be available for any student to view in the gymnasium.
Below, is an example of the steps to be used in order to create this project at the elementary school level:
(Pictures originate from original Recitdp.qc.ca site project.)
1- Information session:
The teacher should first inform the classroom about the creation of this DVD on jump rope skills. The teacher will specify that only some students will be selected to be part of the short film. The students are then selected based on their ability to successfully perform the selected jump rope skills. In addition, these students will have to name and explain the most important steps involved in making each jump a successful one.
2- Jump rope performance:
The teacher will demonstrate various jump rope skills, in order to challenge the students to try them and to give their best performance. There should be a variety of jump rope skills, from easy to difficult in order to provide sufficient interest to students that do not all have the same level of ability. The teacher should create various stations with poster and signs to facilitate comprehension of the skill.
3- Metacognition:
Students are encouraged at each station to reflect and give two important characteristics to successfully achieve the skills. If the student is selected to demonstrate their skill on camera, this student or another classmate may be asked to name and explain the important points to achieve the skill.

4- Initiation to the video camera:
The teacher will select a few students who will be in charge of filming the other classmates. The teacher will also instruct them how to use the camera.
5- 1-2-3; camera, action!
The selected students will present their jump rope skills in front of the camera. The sequence should last approximately 30 seconds. One student will perform the skill while another will be on the side explaining the important points to successfully achieve the jump rope skill.
6- Creating the DVD:
The teacher or a selected group of students will be in charge of editing all the images filmed. A menu can be created for the various jump rope categories.
