I can see myself in my soup!
Translated from the original French RECITDP document here:

Title: I can see myself in my soup! (vector graphic images and the use of computers)
Cycle: Elementary: Cycle 3
High School: Cycle 1
Broad areas of learning: Personal and career planning.
Cross-Curricular Competencies: Construction of identity.
Uses information and communications technologies.
Subject Specific: Moral education.
Competency: Constructs a moral frame of reference.
Description:
Is it easy to talk about myself? Who am I? If I had to compare my personality traits with the one of an animal, which one would I be? If we are what we eat, what type of soup would I eat? A soup or a cream? With rice or noodles? The creation of a soup label will help students understand their qualities, talents and the role they play as a student in the class room or school.
How to realize this project:
First, the students will select a soup of their choice and that they usually enjoy eating. They must then explain why they associate themselves to this choice. Next, they will modify the traditional food label found on the can or package, by replace it with their own characteristics. The ingredients can now be a list of their talents and qualities. These just like on the food label can be placed in order of importance. The “directions”, can now be their way of approaching and interacting with others. The nutritional label can now become a global portrait of the student’s cross-curricular competencies. The rest of the food label can be left to the self expression of the student. The concept is to keep a close resemblance to the original product’s label and general appearance (proportions and dimensions respected). For that reason, this new label will be able to fit on the can. Finally the teacher can place the variety of cans in an area in the classroom.
Equipment needed:
- Computer
- Colored crayons
- Various colored papers
- Digital camera
- Color printer
Added value:
In a short amount of time, the students can create a quality label almost identical to the original. This is due to the multiple advantages of using a vector graphic image program on the computer. However, this new label is an original creation based on each student’s characteristics, which is a good self analysis directly linked with the cross-curricular competency of “construction of identity”. This project can also be realized without a computer and instead use the student’s artistic talents of drawing and do it your self methods.
