Roles


Chairperson or Moderator: acts as a sort of judge or referee who controls the debate. Starting with the Proposer, calls alternate sides to speak. The Chairperson has a script and has to maintain the formality of the contest. Speakers address the Chairperson.

Proposer or First Affirmative: Speaks for the motion, defines it and shows that there is need for change.

Proposer's Seconder: Speaks for the motion. Supports the Proposer's ideas and often presents a plan and its benefits.

Opposer or First Negative: Speaks against the motion. Often defends the present system or asserts that only minor changes are needed.

Opposer's Seconder: Speaks against the motion. Attacks the plans of the Proposer and Seconder and often suggests minor changes to the present system.

Time keeper: Times the speakers' speeches.

Judges / Students: Vote on the motion.

Speaking order for a debate with class participation
  • Chairperson: Reads the motion, controls the debate
  • Proposer: Speaks for the motion.
  • Opposer: Speaks against.
  • Proposer's seconder : Speaks for.
  • Opposer's seconder: Speaks against.
  • Class: Speaks/Questions
  • Chairperson: Closes debate to class.
  • Proposer: Sums up.
  • Opposer: Sums up.
  • Chairperson: Counts votes for, against and abstention. Gives result.
