Look It Up! Researching the arguments - Cloning

Grade Level 10 / Cycle2

Course: History
In a Nutshell

Write a summary of the issue (2 to 3 sentences):

In this debate, we will discuss the subject: whether or not cloning should be made legal. We will state the pros and cons of this matter.

Be it resolved that...
The motion:

B.I.R.T cloning should be made legal.

What's the Big Idea?

Write an outline in point form:

Arguments for: Arguments against:
Big Idea #1: Diseases can be treated as a result of cloning.
  • Diabetes can be treated by the help of extra insulin being produced as a result of cloning.
  • Michrochondrial diseases may be able to be eliminated with the help of genetic engineering.
Big Idea #1: If cloning were used excessively, it may hinder the population.
  • Cloning may produce a whole population that are entirely the same.
  • If a group of clones all produced by the same original, had a virus, the result would be disastrous.
Big Idea #2: Cloning can make it so that starvation can be eliminated.
  • Cloning would make it so that there are only the most ripe fruits and vegetables.
  • Cloning would make it possible so that only the best farm animals will be produced making it so that people would get more and better food.
Big Idea #2: There would be no variability in experiments because all the clones would share the same strengths and weaknesses as their originals.
  • There would be no variability in experiments on animals if all of the animals tested were the same.
  • Since a clone and its original share the same strengths and weaknesses, if one of these got a disease, the ones would likely get it also.
Big Idea #3: Cloning would make it possible to bring back extinct species and repopulate endangered species of animals.
  • With the help of cloning, extinct species may be brought back to life.
  • Endangered species may be repopulated and re-established.
Big Idea #3: The production of transgenic animals is expensive and time consuming, also if we settle only for the best existing animal, there would be no room for improvements of the species.
  • If people settled for only the best existing animals, there would be no room for improvement of the species.
  • For transgenic animals to be produced, it is time consuming and expensive.

Nasty Fundmental Questions
Nasty fundamental questions to ask the "For" side:

What will you tell the starving people of the world if we cannot clone food?

Nasty fundamental questions to ask the "Against" side:

Who is to decide to give life this way?
