An LES which reinforces the themes of the HCE programme:

The focus of the LES is to guide teachers as they work through the themes and intellectual operations of the Economy; Culture and Currents of Thought; and Official and Countervailing Powers. There will be a clearly defined connection to the intellectual operations. Its  design engages the students in understanding the subject matter through the lens of hockey.

The LES also contains many media elements, images, resource links and document collections.  Through the examination and interpretation of print and non-print materials about hockey, students will develop the necessary competencies for success in the programme.

An LES across various time periods

Beginning with the origins of hockey, the first section of our approach focuses on the time period from 1885 to 1929.  The initial guiding question is posed.  Who controls the puck? asks students to recognize the continuing struggle between the players, the owners and the fans.  The control of media by owners and the influence of the fans and players through the media is also considered.

A second time period, from 1930 to 1945 carries these themes and questions forward, but adds new questions such as the role of women, the war, etc.  Key cultural and historical events come into play, in this new timeline view of our hockey history.

A third time period, from 1945 to 1955 and onward allows students to consider the role of politics, unions, new media (TV!) and other issues during the times of Maurice Richard and hockey's a little less quiet revolutions.

An Oral History:  DW Memories!

Available to users of the LES are various media files, including interviews with DW about hockey in his youth, 1930s, and about hockey history in general, through the 1950s, 1960s, and right up to the present day.  Various questions were posed and these have been separated into corresponding mp3 audio files.
