A Short History of Immigration to Canada
Early immigration to Canada was generated by a network of emigration agents -- salesman who advertised Canada's attractions to prospective immigrants. They targeted wealthy farmers, agricultural labourers and female domestics, preferably from GreatBritain, the United States and northern Europe.
History of Refugees in Canada
Canada is a land of refugees. Many of us, or our ancestors, came here because of religious intolerance, political repression, economic hardship, or other intolerable circumstances at home. However, Canada has always been very selective about immigration.
Alberta and Saskatchewan, 1905
Following the acquisition of the West by Canada, the government hoped to increase the population there very rapidly. In the years after the building or the CPR the population of the West grew and and prairie settlements became cities and towns modelled after the farming towns of the East.
Economic Development: 1870--1920
There were three major elements in the development of the Canadian economy between 1871 and 1928: (1)
transcontinentalization, associated with the construction of railways and western wheat exports; (2) continued industrialization, led by the expansion of industries based on technological advances of the late nineteenth century; and (3) a deepening renewal of the North American forest and mining frontier.

Nationhood
Canada developed from a British colony into a completely independent country in a series of small phases ending in 1982 with the patriation of the constitution. The participation of Canada in the military and diplomatic affairs of the world was the most obvious marker of its growing independence from Britain.
Canada and the First World War
When the First World War broke out in 1914, Canada was a much different country than it is today.
Statute Of Westminster
Canada's substantial role in World War I won it representation distinct from Britain in the League of Nations after the war. (see A Nation Matures)

The fifteen years of Laurier's government were distinguished with unprecedented growth and prosperity.
Immigration expanded, especially in the West, leading to the creation of the provinces of Alberta and
Saskatchewan in 1905. Such growth required expansion of the railways and two new continental lines
were built.

Alcan
Alcan had its beginnings in Shawinigan, Quebec, where hydroelectric power facilities had earlier been developed. The first primary aluminum in Canada was produced on October 22, 1901. The operation was then a subsidiary of Aluminum Company of America (Alcoa), the pioneer producer on the North American continent.
Québec forest industry
In 1870, Québec already had seven pulp and paper mills. The industry then grew very rapidly: in 1880 there were 18 mills in operation and in 1890, more than thirty.
