Population and Settlement
IF YOU KNOW OF SITES THAT MATCH ANY OF THE PROGRAM CONTENT SECTIONS BELOW, PLEASE SUGGEST THEM USING OUR FEEDBACK PAGE HERE.
The designated focus of this section of the program asks students to consider "The effects of natural population change and migration on the formation of the population and the settlement of the territory."
The following resource collection was designed to support the developing LEARN LES on Population for Year 2 of the Cycle 2 program. (Most links below refer to external resources on other sites. Most LEARN-produced tools must be accessed from the LES itself.)
After first considering the population and settlement in our own communities and in Quebec in general, we can look back on population trends from 1500 onward, from the Native world to the present. Concepts such as Identity, Pluriculturality, Migration, Growth and Belonging are explored, and students enact their citizenship by considering the "Diversity of social identities and sense of belonging to Québec society."
Guiding questions are suggested for each section of this collection, which is divided according to chronological reference points suggested in the QEP.
We begin by reflecting on Quebec's Populaton Today
Then we consider:
Ancient Migrations | New France | Loyalists | Irish | Slaves | French Canadian Emigration | Western Settlement | Post WWW2 Immigration | Quebec's Populaton Today
Note: A new mini LES on the former Phase 1 entitled "LES 1: Population (Local and Quebec’s Population Today) is located here.
Still to be developed, sections on:
Key Concepts | Cultural References | Elsewhere element: Belgium |

Describes Québec’s demographic situation: low natural growth,
aging population, increased immigration
[See Age characteristics charges from 2006 http://tinyurl.com/3m4rk6r and 2001 http://tinyurl.com/3hfkvz5 and compare.
[Notes about changing situation: Stats Can indicates this trend is changing, even in Quebec. See http://www.statcan.gc.ca/pub/91-215-x/2009000/part-partie1-eng.htm and related Charts . Consider quote: “For a sixth straight year, natural growth was up in Canada, from 132,500 in 2007/2008 to 134,800 in 2008/2009, an increase of 1.7%. This was the highest level of natural growth since 1994/1995. Quebec (8.5%) and British Columbia (8.5%) showed the strongest increases since 2007/2008.” Quebec sees biggest birth-rate hike since 1909” at http://www.ctv.ca/CTVNews/TopStories/20070126/quebec_babyboom_070126/ andhttp://www.ctv.ca/CTVNews/Canada/20070313/census_quebec_070313/ for articles, though accompanying videos seem to be disabled. See also Sectoral Outlook 2010-2012 - Quebec Region at http://tinyurl.com/4xe2fse which offers similar conclusions but also points out. “While migration is buffering the impact of population aging in Quebec to some degree, it will not be enough to eliminate workforce renewal problems.” ]
