Characteristics of a Learning Situation in Kindergarten:

  • Comes from the interest/concern /need of a child (appropriate to child development)
  • Respects the play context of the kindergarten classroom
  • Promotes exploration, inquiry, problem based learning
  • Linked to the attitudes, behaviours, strategies, process and product(s)
  • Respects the Kindergarten mandate.
  • Respects the transdisciplinary nature of the Preschool Education Program
  • Encourages the child to be active(kinaesthetic sensory), reflective and metacognitive
  • Provides different avenues for children to demonstrate the same learning goal (not necessarily concrete measures)
  • Purposeful and meaningful for the child with respect to the contexts of the development of the competencies.
  • Is process driven
  • Respects the global nature of the competency(ies) being targeted.
  • Respects the child’s proximal zone of development.

Inquiry : HOW DO COLOURS EXPRESS YOUR FEELINGS?
Complex Task: To create a painting using colours to express your feelings.
Targeted Competencies:

  • C2 To affirm his/her personality
  • C5 To construct his/her understanding of the world

Skills, concepts, or knowledge the students will need in order to carry out the task:

  • Learn about the different kinds of feelings
  • Learn about the primary colours and secondary colours
  • Learn about cool and warm colours
  • Learn how artists use colours to express feelings or a mood .

Inquiry: DO WE NEED ROBOTS OR DO ROBOTS NEED US?
Complex task: Build and program a WeDo Lego Robot
Targeted Competencies:

  • C4 To communicate using the resources of language
  • C5 To construct his/her understanding of the world
  • C6 To complete and activity or project

Skills, concepts, or knowledges the students will need in ordre to carry out the task:

  • Science and technology: they will learn what is required for mechanical parts to move together and to act on each other
  • Language: they will learn how to build a model by reading and following a plan (Visual reading)
  • Language: they will apply writing strategies to create a visual program.
  • Mathematics: they will learn to sort and organise, to measure and count, to recognise and name shapes, to measure objects using a variety of strategies.
  • Learn to construct a program that does what they imagine it should do (and therefore to problem solve when it doesn’t)
