SHayes Learning Stories: an observational approach to assessment that celebrates success (January 2011)

Kindergarten teacher Sheryl Hayes borrows from New Zealand’s Te Whariki curriculum for Early Childhood Education to inform her teaching practice and make it culturally relevant to her rural students. Its framework encourages the validation and transmission of a community’s cultural values while recognising and validating those of others.   From it, she also borrows the techniques of “Learning Stories”, an observational approach to assessment, a celebration of learning, which creates a meaningful connection between the school, its community and the families of the children it cares for.
