BRIDGING THE GAP; Engaging the 21st Century
Learner FEBRUARY 15th, 2012 SHERATON LAVAL
February 15, 2012 will see NANS educators gather in Laval to hear two speakers deliver messages
about engaging the 21st Century learner. Karen Hume is a well known Canadian teacher,
administrator, author, speaker, and workshop leader. The winner of three “Teacher of the Year”
awards, Karen has taught all but four grades in K-12 (she especially enjoyed Grades 7 and 8), and
has also been a teacher-librarian.
As an administrator, Karen worked in a high-needs K-8 school and then led her district’s
efforts in re-culturing schools to meet the needs of at-risk and struggling learners in Grades
7-12. The author of several books on differentiated instruction, In the morning Karen will
share her ideas and strategies on using differentiated instructional strategies to bridge the
achievement gap.
On the afternoon of February 15, 2012 Eva de Gosztonyi from the Centre of Excellence
for Behaviour Management will speak on the Effects of Trauma on Children. Her presentation will
review the most current research on the effects of trauma on the developing brain. The focus will
be to understand the reasons for some of the difficult-to-understand behaviours that are typically
displayed by our most challenging children. Then we will look at how to best intervene with these
children to help them to grow to be the best they can be, all the while carrying out our role as
the adults in their lives, which is to keep them safe. Eva de Gosztonyi is a psychologist who has
worked for over 35 years in schools. She is presently the Co-ordinator of the Center of Excellence
for Behaviour Management, a support to the ten English School Boards of Quebec, helping them to
provide effective interventions for students with behavioural disorders
