ePub is a file format for reading books on an eReader. The text automatically flows from one page to the next regardless of font size chosen. This makes them readable on large and small mobile devices.

An eBook is a book in a digital format
An ePub format is a format for eBooks. It can include embedded images, audio, videos and can be read on a variety of devices. Not all devices will be able to play videos.

Reading ePubs
  • you need an application to read an ePub. This can be on your computer or on an eReader.
  • you can use an eReader (e.g. iPad, Kobo, Sony Reader...)
    • eReaders usually come with applications for reading. You can also download alternate apps for reading
    • sample applications include iBooks, Kobo, Stanza...
Creating ePubs
  • on a Mac - Pages (you cannot save from an iDevice version of Pages as an ePub)
  • on a Mac - iBooks author (it is meant for educators who wish to publish materials to the App Store)
  • on a PC (Mac, Linux) - Sigil
  • from your computer to http://edu.epubbud.com/
    • you can save your file as a pdf and upload it to edu.epubbud. The site will create a conversion to the epub format. The file can be read online or can be downloaded to a computer for reading on a book reader.

  • you need software that can save to the ePub format (Pages, SIGIL, )

  • you can embed web links, images, movies (for reading in iBooks)
  • there are also story creation apps for the iPad that save as ePubs

To find ePubs
  • ePubs can be purchased from commercial sites
  • free ePubs can be found at a variety of sites, including the commercial sites. These are books that are in the public domain.
