PlanetFesto

The Village School in Maine (a grade 3-5 school with about 675) is currently building their part of the planetfesto.org virtual ribbon--a segment long enough to circle their gym. They want to challenge another school to see how high a percentage of students and staff they can achieve. Ideally, the school would be in a different part of the US, or abroad. To see the Village School's great contributions, go to www.planetfesto.org and search by village school.

Roaming Gnome

This distance learning project uses the premise of a gnome's travels and 5 geography themes to engage students in critical thinking, research, and writing. Every few weeks, a photo and clues about places around the world to which the gnome has traveled will be posted. Using the clues in the photos and text, the students must try to locate the Gnome. Students can communicate with other classes by posting comments that are relevant to the bi-weekly topics in the project's discussion area. Teachers can email original gnome art work to be placed in a project gallery.

International Boiling Point Project

Students all over the world will conduct the same experiment which involves boiling a pot of water and recording the boiling point, room temperature, elevation, volume of water, and heating device. They will submit their results to the project web site and the results will be posted in a database for all participants to examine. Then, students will analyze the data to determine which factor has the greatest correlation to boiling point.

iEARN Learning Circles has been a long running project that has facilitated Internet and communication technology-assisted collaborative project-based learning among classrooms in diverse regions of the world since 1995. Learning Circles are highly interactive, project-based partnerships among a small number of schools located throughout the world. There are two sessions each year, September-January and January-May. Four themes are offered in 2005: Computer Chronicles, Places and Perspectives, MindWorks, and A Learning World.

Human Genetics: A Worldwide Search for the Dominant trait

One way for students to learn how their physical characteristics, or traits, are inherited is by gathering a great deal of information about specific, easily-seen human features. Students can analyze this information to determine which traits are controlled by dominant genes and how often such dominant genes occur. During this project, students will complete surveys, formulate hypotheses, and use the data compiled by students around the globe to test their hypotheses.

The Noon Day Measurement Collaborative Project

Over 2,000 years ago Eratosthenes made a remarkably accurate measurement of the earth's circumference. This project is a recreation of that measurement and requires collaboration of students in places at different latitudes on the earth to make shadow measurements, share data, use a spreadsheet (optional) to make comparisons, and then replicate and share their results.

Bucket Buddies

Students around the United States and other countries will
collect samples from local ponds to answer the question: Are
the organisms found in pond water the same all over the
world? Participants will: Identify organisms in a water sample,
compare their findings with other participating classes,
determine which, if any, of the organisms are the same in
other, more distant water sources, and look for relationships
and trends in the data collected by all project participants.

Weather Data Shared

Students record cloud cover - types of clouds and the amount
of cloud cover by percentage or fraction, precipitation type (if
any), sun and shade temperatures almost every day. We are
located in the high desert area of the Southwestern USA. We
would like similar data, as listed above, e-mailed from your
students and we will share this data with all participants.
