Raising Student Awareness

When students navigate on the Internet, they become users of the network. As do drivers using the road network or captains using the waterways, students using the information highway must observe certain rules. Teachers must familiarize students with the ways of the Internet and help them learn to use the network safely, to exercise appropriate caution and to act responsibly.

Take the time to discuss these issues with the students. Examine the advantages and disadvantages of being an Internet user. Using accessible terminology, present the school's usage policy and code of conduct. However, there is no point in giving a long lecture at the beginning of the year that covers every detail.

Make this education an ongoing process! Take advantage of any relevant situation to explain responsible Internet use. Start by looking at the aspects related to planned activities.

If students are preparing to search the Internet, discuss:

  • the reliability of information
  • sites to be avoided; the development of critical thinking skills
  • respect of copyright and what constitutes plagiarism
  • the risks of replying to requests for personal information
  • advertising and commercial offers
  • respect for other users

Warn students about search engines that can track the sites they visit and about the risk of accidentally finding questionable sites that do not correspond to their search criteria.

Encourage students to explore, but give them the means to deal with unexpected situations.
