If planning is well done, the rest will fall into place.
There are different tools, organizers and models you can use to plan your podcast.
Storyboard
You can use stickies to create a colour coded storyboard.
If you are making an enhanced podcast, another colour could be added for images.
Timeline
You can make a timeline
Project Planner
Download from Longfellow Middle School
This is a sample planner from a school in Wisconsin. Items include:
- Title
- Intended audience
- Paragraph for blog show notes
- Format (interview, skit, narrative, rap...)
- Detailed chapter or section by section script, audio and photo enhancements etc.
- Places for project approval check, peer review check and approval for broadcasting.

Writing the script or preparing the interview
The script should be written out. If an interview is to be done, questions should be prepared in advance.
Just as in a writing workshop, the script should be conferenced with peers and the teacher and revised.
Practise so as to have a natural voice with good pacing.
It is a good idea to work in teams. One student can act as the sound engineer, starting and stopping the recording and checking the sound levels.
The broadcaster(s) can then concentrate on the script.
Once the main part is recorded it may need editing. Once the text is the way you want it, you can add other tracks.
- You may need a jingle, sound effects, or other audio additions.
- If you are making an enhanced podcast, add the photographs.
- Make sure the timing between the photographs and the audio is correct.
The podcast file needs to go on a server. You need enough space for the files and enough bandwidth for the podcast subscribers. You also need an RSS feed.
