Social Computing Terms

Many new words have been coined for the many aspects of social computing.

Aggregator	a place to access all the blogs that interest you. You can subscribe to a variety of blogs and the aggregator, or news feed collector, will show you all the blogs in your personal window. You have to register and then subscribe to any blogs you wish to receive. Learn more
Blog	a web log where you can post artlcles and receive comments from other people originally used for online journals from Wikipedia Learn more
Folksonomy	a new term coined to describe the phenomenon of tagging items from Wikipedia
RSS	Really Simple Syndication or Rich Site Summary If a site has an RSS feed you can have the information appear on a web site. When information in the feed is updated, it is automatically updated on the web site. You can link an RSS feed to your browser to automatically get information (e.g. a news feed from a news site) RSS feeds are what aggregators use to collect the newly posted articles to the blogs you subscribe to.
Social Bookmarking	Unlike private bookmarks, social bookmarking allows you to see other people's sites. You can also get a list of whom else has bookmarked the same site and then subscribe to people's lists you find interesting. Your archives are available on the web. Tag	keyword or category name used to help identify an image (on a site such as Flickr used to identify the keywords in an article If you visit Flickr or Technorati you can see the most popular tags An interesting site to visit that is based on tags is 10x10
vlog	short for video blog information on a blog which is conveyed mainly through video may be raw footage from cell phones or edited short movies
Wiki	a Wiki is a server-based application that allows you to set up a collorative space. anyone who goes to a wiki can add or edit articles Wikipedia is an example of a wiki. It is an online encyclopedia which grows as people contribute articles.
