Countdown
to an Internet Telecollaboration
100th day celebration. What is 100 day?
My colleagues and I first heard about this wonderful celebration when we were attending a math
workshop, at our school January 24, 1998, with Western Quebec School Board Math Consultant, Pat
McQuatty. We decided we wanted to be part of the celebrations. Working quickly, due to the limited
time frame, our 100th day would be February 12, we rushed headlong into our project. A few teachers
got together to plan and organise a 100th day school celebration. I volunteered to check out a Web
site for kindergarten 100 day ideas. What happened that day changed my life as a teacher.
At home on my lunch hour, I typed in the address and ended up at the
Quebec English Schools
Network. I couldn't get into the KinderChat site, so I played around. I eventually ended up at
the
QESN Help Centre.
Here I read.... No problem is too small. No question is insignificant.... so, I submitted a
question! I need activities for 100 day at our school. We have never done this before and need any
suggestions you have... ( I was actually very excited, our brand new computer was being useful! )
My reply was quickly answered.

The decision
It wasn't very long before I had an e-mail on my computer from the QESN, they were ready to help
in any way they could. Believe me, I needed a lot of help, this was the first time I had EVER
really used a computer. Through many e-mail conversations with Christiane Dufour, I decided that a
collection of kind actions would be a different and positive project. Christiane invited me to use
my new found technology skills to invite others to join us in the celebration. That's when I
decided I would collect 100 acts of kindness in the classroom as well as through the internet. The
next few steps were very exciting. I was learning about a whole new world.

The invitation
I learned that when you have an idea for a project, you must advertise, and write an invitation
to the project. Christiane, gave me a list of
helpful sites and
a step by step guide to prepare our invitation
. She helped me plan and polish my drafts of the
project invitation
. At the same time, I was planning how, as a class we would collect and record data and
what we would do with the project. It was definitely a time of high energy.

The launch
Monday, February 2 the project was launched! I have never been so excited about anything before!
I was hooked on the computer! My energy passed on to the students in the classroom as we discussed
the project they were about to enter into. We sent out a copy of the invitation that was sent on
the
QESN-announce
mailing list
to the staff at our school, to invite everyone to participate in our project. We had only
seven school days to reach our goal!
