A 100th Day Celebration Project

Classroom Organisation
Grade 3 class
February 1998 |
Learning along the way... I spoke with the children, they decided and helped develop ways to charts, using tally charts and bar graphs. The students and I made display for our project. The earth, created out of blue and green construction paper, to be circled with white and yellow construction paper stars, each one representing a single act of kindness shining down on the earth.
I realised we would be spending a good portion of each day focusing on the project, so I developed a Language Arts Unit on kindness. We each read stories, I read to them and we illustrated acts of kindness from the stories. We used synonyms for the word kindness in sentences. We were ready for the first day! Before I tell you about our final results, there are still MORE organising tips to tell you about! Each time a participant e-mails their response, I needed to send out a ready made thank you note. This note I kept in a word processing file. The QESN was there every step of the way with instructions that you can now see on their Web site. They showed me how to Copy a text from my word processor to Paste it in an E-mail message . I also kept a record of the participants names and addresses in my address book for eventually sending my results in one mass mailing! I'd never used E-mail before, and needed to learn how to create an address book in Netscape , and also how to create a distribution list . Lastly, all the contributions were kept in a file to be sent out at the end of the project. It really doesn't take much time to do all this. I learned how to use a word processor to edit E-mail messages I received . It is very rewarding work. The participants are supportive of all your efforts. |

We created a simple record book,
made from shower hooks and construction paper to glue responses in. A paper bag, filled with cut
paper to write responses on. A decorated box, to hold responses until we glued them into our record
book. The number chart and tally sheet were stapled onto our display. We estimated how many
responses we'd need daily to reach our goal. We each predicted how many total responses we would
get! ( this changed daily) Some of the children were not sure we would ever reach 100 acts of
kindness, our goal. I'm not sure any of us realised what amazing results we would have in the
end!
