Text to Speech in OS X

Text to speech software comes with the OS X operating system and can be used to have the computer read the text to you.

This can be very useful during the writing process.  Having the computer read back text that has been written in a word processor gives the writer useful feedback.

Questions to keep in mind when listening to the text;

Does this text say what I intended?
Are there missing ideas that I need to add?
Are there words missing?

It is best to select a sentence or at most a paragraph at a time.

Text to speech can also be used with Web sites or downloaded documents where the readability of the text may be difficult for the user but the their auditory comprehension is good.

To learn how to configure "text to speech"  to control the voice, rate of reading and activation shortcuts you can view a short video or download the pdf job aid.

Text to Speech with SAFARI

In Safari you can select any text and have the computer read it back to you.  This can be useful when the readability of a text is higher than the sight reading ability of the reader.  Using the same Key combination that was set up with the previous instructions, the computer will read the text.  Video Demo
