About the School

The Montreal Oral School for the Deaf was established in 1950.  Our mission is to teach deaf children to listen and to speak.  As specialists in oral/deaf education, our guiding principals are

    * the development of listening and spoken language
    * early integration into the regular school system
    * ongoing services of MOSD teachers and professionals for the child and family
    * involvement and training for family members

The Montreal Oral School for the Deaf offers both direct and indirect intervention to hearing-impaired students according to their needs and abilities. Direct services include parent-infant services, full-day programs and integration services. Indirect services are offered to students on a less frequent basis or at a greater distance. Though full integration into the child's local school is the main goal, there are also options within MOSD for partial integration.

The educational services available to students in the Montreal area are:

    * Garnier Kids Parent Infant Program (children 0-3 years)
    * Agnes (Nan) Phillips Nursery Program, with reverse integration
    * itinerant services for students fully mainstreamed into their local nursery, elementary or high school
    * elementary classroom units with partial mainstreaming

With early diagnosis, hearing aid and/or cochlear implant use and intensive speech/language stimulation, the prognosis for the child's later development is markedly improved. An intensive educational program lays the foundation for later success. Over the years, the majority of students receiving MOSD services have completed high school with many continuing on to post-secondary education.
