| Portfolio assessment is defined as a cumulative and ongoing collection of entries that are selected and commented on by the student, the teacher and/or peers, to assess the student's progress in the development of a competency. |
Simon, M., & Forgette-Giroux, R. (2000).
Impact of a content selection framework on portfolio assessment at the classroom level.
Assessment in Education, 7(1), 83-101.
The Evaluation phase of the portfolio process is when both student and teacher step back and take a look at the student's development over a given period of time. They take stock of goals tried for and how they were met, as well as charting the course for future learning. Students need clear guidance as to what is expected of them throughout the portfolio process in order to arrive at the evaluation phase with an understanding of their own development. Many teachers use not only student's personal goals, but also provincial benchmarks to establish criteria for excellence. The portfolio can be used to assess student learning, but is meant more as a developmental tool than an assessment tool.
