What is a project?
There are many ways of talking about project-based learning. The view adopted here is that successful Project-based learning has these 5 ingredients- A guiding question or problem that sets the scene and holds no right or wrong answer.
- Student collaborative research, often over an extended period of time
- Construction of an artefact or presentation by students, ideally to an extended classroom audience
- Use of technology-based cognitive and communications tools (ICT)
- A community of inquiry that can extend beyond the walls of the classroom
|
The guiding question provides the students with information about essential parts of the problem. It is used as a basis for formulating key component questions about what they need to understand. «More on guiding or essential questions »
The intellectual, methodological, personal and social, and communication-related competencies provide the foundation for designing what the project will look like in class. Students will work to develop their potential as independent learners and active members of the class and community as they work to accomplish their project goals.

The project steps lead students to seek an answer through active learning and experimentation rather than through textual research. Evaluation FOR learning can happen throughout all the phases of the project and will target Cross-curricular competencies as well as subject area competencies. NOTE: This is a view of a generic project process. You might want to use others such as the Inquiry Process, the Problem-solving process, etc. The subject areas also provide imbedded processes you can use to plan your project. |
