FOCUS - Secondary, Cycle 1



Focus, Secondary Cycle 1 is a collection of materials that were designed to help guide teachers in the development of competency-based learning activities. As such, there are four parts to the Focus, Secondary Cycle 1 collection:

The binder is the point of connection for all subject areas. Here you will find the overview of all the model units, across subject areas and how these have been designed to facilitate cross-discipline planning, teaching and learning. It contains the Cross-Curricular Competency Graphic Organizers and evaluation grids, conference and reflection tools for each of the 9 CCCs.

DVD - Focus in Action

The enclosed DVD - Focus in Action demonstrates how three teachers and their classrooms of students worked their way through: interdisciplinary planning; Cross-Curricular Competency development; subject-specific content; scaffolding student development and use of competencies; and overall implementation of competency teaching and learning in the Secondary, Cycle 1 classroom.   FOCUS_cd

Subject-Specific Teacher's Manuals

Each of these materials has been designed to align with the content of the Québec Education Program, the intent of which is to use a constructivist approach to learning in order to seamlessly merge Subject competencies and content with the Cross-curricular Competencies and the Broad Areas of Learning. The model units included use an inquiry, or questioning approach to engage the students and to group the learning activities suggested into complex, meaningful tasks that help engage and develop competencies.

Focus Student Planners

Secondary, Cycle 1
Geography, History, Math, Science and Technology, The Arts,
Physical Education & Health, Moral Education.

The Focus, Secondary Cycle 1 Student Planners are subject-specific booklets  designed to guide students in their subject learning process as they work through learning and evaluation situations. Each subject in the Québec Education Program has its own learning process. This learning process has been broken down into simple steps and language that can easily be understood by the Cycle 1 student. Integrated into the subject-specific learning process are graphic organizers that help students engage and develop cross-curricular competencies in an integrated way. The student planners are an excellent resource to engage students in the learning process and to guide them in reflecting and evaluating the steps they used throughout their learning activities.
