A Gift of Art - Register now

The Gift of Art is an art and collaboration project for youth, educators and community. It is an art project designed for primary schools, secondary schools and colleges which engages students by using murals for expression and fundraising on a theme proposed by Painting A New World (PNMW).

The yearly themes are based on United Nations Decade on Biodiversity (UNDB) 2011-2020. PNMW and Kiangure Springs Initiative are in partnership with UNDB and the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD - click here). PNMW provides international aid through the Gift of Art project to Kiangure Springs Initiative in Kenya who under the community empowerment employ local artists to paint murals on school walls while engaging and educating children about their environment and future. PNMW has successfully implemented the International mural project in Chad where we now have one mural at the Holy Flame School of N'Djamena.

The theme this year is Saving our Marine and Coastal ecosystem through art.

The principal goals of the project are that students learn about important humanitarian and environmental issues and illustrate their creativity on their mural. Ten outstanding murals produced by primary students, and ten by secondary and college students will be selected for the Awards contest.

It is really quite an incredible line-up with presenters from Canada, the U.S., and several other countries around the globe.

These presentations make great PD - not more than 20 minute long (except the keynotes) they are great for sharing and acting as discussion starters. They are asynchronous presentations - can be watched when it is convenient to you. They are released under a creative commons license.

The Opening keynote will be released on November 21. In the following two weeks (Monday to Friday) there will be 4 presentations made available each day. I have learned so much over the past years from watching K12 Online presentations. This year promises to be equally thought-provoking, stimulating and fun.

«Tuned in to Culture» is a provincial project that provides a space for students to publish podcasts about culturally significant artifacts in their community. This workshop will look at podcast production in the classroom across subjects and cycles. Planning, researching, writing scripts, rehearsing and recording will be explored. Imagine... David Suzuki in YOUR classroom!

The National Film Board of Canada and the David Suzuki Foundation are pleased to present the David Suzuki Virtual Classroom on November 1st and 2nd, 2011. This is an amazing opportunity for you and your high school students (age 13+) to connect with the famous environmentalist, live and in real time, from your classroom. Students across Canada will have an opportunity to ask David Suzuki questions about the themes raised in the NFB documentary Force of Nature: The David Suzuki Movie. During the online session, Dr. Suzuki will talk intimately about his rich experiences and compelling vision for the future of our planet.

Before the event, watch the DVD with your students, using the educator’s guide (see below) to navigate through discussion and classroom activities. Work with your students to formulate questions for Dr. Suzuki to send to him in advance of the event. Questions can be related to the film or to Dr. Suzuki’s work.

About registration

• Make sure your classroom meets the technical specifications required to take part;
• Fill out the application form;
• Up to 200 schools will be selected to participate to ensure equal representation of schools across Canada;
• We will confirm participation by e-mail upon receipt and processing of registration forms;
• For $129.95 (+ applicable taxes, shipping & handling), ALL participants will receive a DVD copy of the film for use in the classroom and a login for the webinar;
• Each successful registration is valid for the participation of up to 2 classrooms per school;
• The last date to register for the David Suzuki Virtual Classroom is October 1st, 2011, at midnight.

In Toronto or Montreal?

The NFB Mediatheque in Toronto and the NFB CinéRobotheque in Montreal will be hosting screenings of Force of Nature: The David Suzuki Movie on the big screen for school groups during the month of September. Each screening will be followed by a facilitated discussion about the film. For more information and to book a spot for your class, please contact Merrill Matthews at m.matthews@nfb.ca in Toronto and Daniel Racine at d.racine@onf.ca or any of our Customer Service representatives at 514-496-6887 in Montreal. Screenings and discussions are available in English or in French at both locations.

Also, as a special event, the NFB Mediatheque in Toronto will screen the film and play host to the David Suzuki Virtual Classroom in the NFB Cinema on November 1st and 2nd. If you and your students are interested in participating, please contact Merrill Matthews at m.matthews@nfb.ca. The David Suzuki Virtual Classroom event is only available in English.

About the Educator’s Guides

The purpose of these guides is to encourage teachers of grades 9–12 to incorporate the National Film Board documentary Force of Nature: The David Suzuki Movie into their lesson plan by identifying where and how the film can support current curriculum expectations. In addition to connecting film content with subject outcomes, the guide offers a number of suggestions and activities to help teachers extend the discussion of a variety of themes, organized under the following headings:
• Population, Consumption and Sustainable Development
• Internment, Hiroshima, Human Rights and the Next Generation
• Science and Technology in Society
• Towards a New Perspective

These units can be explored selectively or collectively, depending on their relevance to the curriculum for which the teacher is responsible. An adaptation of this guide has also been developed in French to accompany the French version of the film. This guide can be downloaded here.

In Force of Nature: The David Suzuki Movie the iconic scientist’s “last lecture” is intercut with emotional scenes that trace his life’s journey, from an internment camp in British Columbia and the swamps of small-town Ontario to a memorial ceremony in Hiroshima and the CBC studios, where for decades he has created his much-loved, award-winning TV show, The Nature of Things with David Suzuki. The film encourages the examination of world events in relation to oneself and one another, as well as our interconnections with nature.

Montreal, March 23, 2011 – Blue Metropolis is proud to announce its 13 th Montreal International Literary Festival, taking place from April 27 to May 1st, 2011 at the Holiday Inn Select Downtown Montreal.

This year’s event features over 170 activities and more than 200 writers and artists, representing 12 countries and seven languages. The annual event promises to be an astonishing literary trip to the metropolises of other cultures.

Along with new President and General Manager, Ms. William St-Hilaire, the programming committee – made up of Eve Pariseau, Director of French and Allophone Programming; Gregory McCormick, Director of English and Allophone Programming; Julie Groleau, Children's Festival Coordinator; and Florence Allegrini, Educational Programme Coordinator – was inspired by the words of Indian poet, Kamala Das: “Ask the books that I read why I changed…”. They have put together a spectacular programme featuring:

2011 Blue Metropolis International Literary Grand Prix. As always, Blue Metropolis will award its annual International Literary Grand Prix to an author at the festival. But new this year: the winner will only be announced at the opening night celebration, held on Wednesday, April 27. Who do you think it will be? The general public is invited to attend the opening event, where the winner will receive his or her award. The $10,000 award recognizes a lifetime of literary achievement by a writer of international reputation.

A Celebration of Indian Writing . Organized in close cooperation with the Year of India in Canada, and thanks in part to the support of The Cole Foundation, this series of events invites visitors to discover the provocative and sometimes shocking poetry of the young Kamala Das, the dense and playful prose of Amitav Ghosh, and exciting readings by some of India’s most famous and celebrated writers.

Scotiabank Giller Prize Event . For the first time at the Festival, we present the Scotiabank Giller Prize Event, a conversation between the 2009 Scotiabank Giller Prize winner, Linden McIntyre , and the 2010 winner, Johanna Skibsrud . This prestigious event will be held at the oldest chapel in Montreal, Notre-Dame-de-Bon-Secours, in the Old Port, on Saturday, April 30.

The Al Majidi Ibn Dhaher Arab Prize . The recipient of this year’s Blue Metropolis Arab Prize could not be more current: Alaa Al Aswany, who recently gained attention for his 2011 book, On the State of Egypt , which – in addition to his novels – criticizes the Egyptian regime. This award is sponsored by the Abu Dhabi Authority for Culture and Heritage and will be presented on Thursday, April 28 at 6 p.m.

Strega Prize . The relationship between Blue Met and the local Italian community is as strong as ever. In conjunction with the Italian Cultural Institute and the Bellonci Foundation, the Blue Metropolis Strega Prize will be awarded to novelist Antonio Pennacchi for his novel Canale Mussolini at a ceremony on Saturday, April 30. Blue Met is pleased to announce that this event – and each year’s Strega Prize winner – will be a regular part of our future programming.

CBC Blue Series/ La Série littéraire Radio-Canada . Year after year, this series of events is one of the festival’s most popular. Hosts Eleanor Wachtel, Michael Enright, Sue Smith, Jeanette Kelly, Christiane Charette, Anna Asimakopulos and special guest host, Noah Richler, interview literary stars such as Gore Vidal , Alexandre Jardin , Amitav Ghosh , and Bernhard Schlink . As It Happens host Carol Off moderates the Blue Metropolis Scotiabank Giller Prize event.

Writers in Peril . Our 4 th annual series, in conjunction with Media@McGill and Reporters without Borders, aims to explore the issues that writers face when confronted with the dangers of oppression, threats, censorship and revolution. With Alaa Al Aswany , Gilbert Sinoué , Caroline Fourest , and Taslima Nasreen .

Master Classes and Student Literary Workshops . With limited pre-registration spots, these writing workshops are often sold out before the Festival even begins. It’s no wonder with authors of the calibre of Anne Fine , Kim Thuy , Eric Fottorino , and Johanna Skibsrud .

4 th Annual Blue Metropolis Children’s Festival, presented by TD . Over 75 free literary activities are offered for children under the age of 12 and their families. “Faith Shorts” global film competition opens for entries

On Wednesday 9^th March, “Faith Shorts”, the Tony Blair Faith Foundation’s global film competition opens for entries.

Faith Shorts 2011 gives young people between the ages of 14 and 18 the opportunity to express what their faith means to them, in their own words, and take this to the global stage by winning the chance to see their film premiered at a ceremony at the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA).

The films will be judged by a high profile panel including Tony Blair. Hollywood stars Hugh Jackman and Jet Li, Bollywood star Anil Kapoor, Oscar winning producer Nik Powell and Lord Puttnam, former FOX studio President Sherry Lansing, Deepak Verma of Pukkanasha films, religious leaders including Rabbi David Rosen and the Grand Mufti of Bosnia and many more.

The winners of Faith Shorts 2011 will win an all-expenses paid trip to London with their parent or guardian to accept their awards at BAFTA. The winners will be taken on a personal tour of the National Film and Television School by the school’s director, Oscar-winning producer and Faith Shorts judge, Nik Powell and attend a film workshop in Manchester. The overall winner will have the opportunity to make an edit a film with a professional crew.

The project will consist of youth-led workshops, an art contest and collection, a travelling exhibition, and an interactive website.

About the Workshops:

The workshops will guide participants through an exploration of how 'defining moments' throughout Canadian history have shaped their personal narratives and identities through a series of creative and interactive activities. Workshops are aimed to inspire participants to take part in the national art contest and collection.

Application Procedure:

- Candidates must be between the ages of 18 - 30.

Gender Equity and Diversity symposium Feb. 10th

Issues related to gender and sexual diversity are increasingly problematic in today’s diverse society. School, as a microcosm of society, is being deeply affected by these issues, often in a negative manner as illustrated in recent stories in the news media.

While discussions regarding matters related to gender equity and diversity should be the responsibility of parents, it falls on educators to provide forums for youth to dialogue.

There are few if any instances where schools have addressed gender equity and diversity in an all day symposium aimed at students, educators and community agencies and the general public. Lake of Two Mountains High School, 2105 Guy Street Deux Montagnes in the Sir Wilfrid Laurier School Board is hosting a Gender Equity and Diversity Symposium: Tolerance Through Understanding, on February 10, 2011.

Some of the topics that will be addressed by invited speakers include, but are not limited to beauty and body image, gender portrayals and stereotypes in media, date rape, issues related to and faced by gay, lesbian and bisexuals, gender in the workplace, the influence of culture on gender, gender and the law.

The outcome of the Symposium will be a Lake of Two Mountains High School Gender Equity and Diversity Charter of Rights.

The speaker roster and session description are also attached.

Learners Without Borders (LWB) is pleased to announce the Launch of their
Second Annual Kajjansi Jewellery Sale. LWB was formed approximately one
year ago. Since then, thanks to the generosity of hundreds of people like
you, an entire school and village in Uganda has been transformed through the
sale of the now famous hand-made jewellery from recycled materials. However,
our endeavour has only just begun. Currently, LWB is building a clinic,
extending the Future Leaders' School and continuing to improve the lives of
many through sustainable and enduring projects.

On Friday, October 29th, LWB will be hosting a jewellery sale featuring the

Animating the classroom: Toon Boom and LEARN join forces to bring animation into the classrooms of English Quebec

Bringing learning to life is not only the objective of this joint partnership between Toon Boom and LEARN, it is a key goal for all educators. As of this September, elementary and high school students and teachers in English schools across Quebec will be able to access software which will help make learning in the classroom more engaging and relevant. Toon Boom and LEARN have joined forces to make available licenses for animation software students and teachers will be able to utilize in order to explain concepts, tells stories, express themselves creatively while learning about the basics of animation and technology. It is a unique educational opportunity for the English community and one which many educators are anxious to introduce into the classrooms.

Toon Boom, a Montreal-based company, is known internationally for its software which has been used by most of the major Hollywood studios for productions like The Princess and The Frog and The Simpsons. Toon Boom’s goal is to expand into the educational milieu where their experience in animation can be shared by young people everywhere. LEARN, a non-profit educational organization, has the infrastructure and contacts to help make this educational venture a possibility.

Both Toon Boom and LEARN have already started training sessions with key educators from across the province in order to assure a smooth introduction for the animation software. Dikran Husseindjian, Director of Education markets at Toon Boom, highlighted the importance of making it simple and accessible for teachers and user’s alike providing proper training as well as a reliable support team.

Hello all,

I am writing to let you know that we still have spaces available for groups who wish to participate in an amazing youth exchange program offered through the YMCA and Canadian Heritage. It's a program for youth groups (10-30 youth) from ages 12-17. Budget permitting, we will send your group (we cover the cost of airfare) on an exchange trip (5 days minimum, not including travel time) to exchange with another similar group from elsewhere in Canada. We can also provide additional funding (special measures) when necessary.

The application deadline for spring 2011 is September 30th!! Please give me a call if you would like further information. We are actively searching for groups who are interested in applying! Take advantage of this amazing opportunity to travel and to learn!

The Canada Science and Technology Museum is Canada’s only comprehensive, multi-disciplinary science and technology museum. Museums are part of the creative economy, part of the knowledge economy. A Science and Technology museum helps us to honor our past, understand our present and inspire our future showing the importance of Science and Technology in our society. This national institution, with its unique collection of thousands of artifacts, now needs to find a new home to continue this work.

The Museum is consulting Canadians on creating a new, state-of-the art science and technology museum that reflects the importance of science and technology to our country’s past, present and future. We are writing to invite you to take part in this consultation process. The Museum is reaching out to a wide range of stakeholders across the country, asking them to share their insights on how we can make this new museum a truly national endeavour. *** Your input is confidential and any information we share from this process will only be in aggregate form.

Attached you will find an invitation for a reception on Thursday November 19, 2009 planned to coincide with the beginning of the QPAT Annual Convention. The event is hosted by Patricia Peter and Holly Hampson from NANS (New Approaches, New Solutions); Julie Hobbs, Carol Marriott and Diane Wood from SAST (Supporting School Administrators Support Team); and Sandra Salesas from GOAL (Guidance Oriented Approach). Over the past year a group of MELS- SCA resource people have developed an informal mini consortium that we refer to as the Learning Partners. The partnership aims to coordinate the various initiatives in a way that will replace the tendency to work in silos with a more coordinated and collaborative approach. Our event appears in the QPAT program as session B 018 but we have extended the time and moved the event to the Embassy Suites across the street. This venue is better suited to the networking and relationship- building momentum that we want to create. We hope that you are able to join us ,and, please help us out by spreading the word.

Environment Canada's Biosphere offers customized training for teachers in English and French

The Biosphère is pleased to offer free training in English and French for elementary and secondary school teachers, educational advisors and science teachers across Canada. These training sessions will help teachers integrate environmental concepts into their teaching and encourage young people to take action to protect the environment. Varying in length from one to two days, the sessions are offered at the Biosphère or at your school on request and during specific periods throughout the year. Introduction to the concepts, principles, and practices of teaching about the environment and environmental engagement. This intensive training facilitates an understanding of the various levels of commitment and integrates this concept into teaching. Experiential learning strategies can be used to help students acquire new behaviours and new competencies. The aim of this training is to develop and enrich the competencies of teachers in using these practical techniques. After this session, participants will be able to use strategies such as nature field trips, decision making, and resolving environmental problems. Offered in two separate blocks, this training allows educators to learn about climate change and energy or about water and forests. Participants will receive practical tools to help them design learning activities on these subjects and the issues involved.
