Learning Situations

Secondary Cycle One
Parkour: An LES in Movement  
In a safe environment, such as a gym, students will select different ways to use each of the pre-selected obstacles.

Manipulation 101:  An LES on juggling  
Students perform a sequence of object manipulation skills. A variety of equipment (e.g. juggling equipment, basketballs, mini volleyballs) is available to enable them to make a choice of movement skills.

Cross-country Skiing
Students work in small teams and practise the following technical skills: diagonal stride, sidestep, herringbone step, tuck position and snowplow. ... They apply the principles of coordination and balance relevant to each technique ... They develop motor skills, etc.

Let’s Put on a Show
Students create a sequence of locomotor, nonlocomotor and manipulation skills, using two of the following types of activities: rhythmic activities, skill activities and technical/artistic activities.

Handball
Students play a specific role, determined by the team and based on the strengths and weaknesses of each player. Together, they develop an offence strategy based on their knowledge about handball.

A Friendly Match
Students experiment with types of wrestling: Japanese, African, Belgian, Swiss, Danish and Canadian. In teams of three ... students help each other adapt their movements and actions to unforeseeable events...they choose among the following actions: pushing, pulling and reverse twisting.

Badminton Tournament
Students play a variety of roles.... students pair up with a classmate and participate in the development, implementation and evaluation of a plan of action... they develop a routine based on at least two action rules in duelling activities.

Acrogym
Students form teams of six ... take into account the different roles in the formation of an acrogym team: base, flyer, leader and assistant...  in pairs, trios and fours, students try forming pyramids and choose five of them to use in a routine.

Wrestling Games 
Students develop a plan of action, taking into account the principles of action and communication applicable to wrestling games.  They implement their plan of action during wrestling matches and make the necessary adjustments. They apply the rules of the game and safety rules, and demonstrate ethical behaviours appropriate to combat sports.

Secondary Cycle Two
Volleyball

Students determine their strengths and challenges in volleyball. Based on these they develop a strategy, implement it and evaluate its effectiveness. They diagram their strategy,  evaluate their performance, participate in the development, implementation and evaluation of the plan of action, etc.   The situation will end with a tournament in which you will implement your plan of action

EMSB Healthy Active Living Journals: Secondary Cycle 2 and Cycle 1
Students  develop an action plan for the year that will encourage them to change or improve upon their health.  Resources are included to help keep track of fitness and lifestyle information.
