Alice in Wonderland Literacy Event

When offering services and activities to families, CLC schools will often conduct a needs assessment - a method of gathering data from the school community, to better tailor the interventions, partnerships, and programs that the school, and the community, can offer. For example, in the Central Quebec School Board, Valcartier Elementary school serves not only the English-speaking population of the area but also the Francophone military families that live nearby.

Community Development Agent (CDA) and school secretary Jayne Doddridge says, "We have noticed in our school the difficulty some children have reading in English, so we wanted to create more spaces and opportunities for children to read in English." Some of the activities and programs they offer include Reading Wednesdays, where students are allowed to stay in a recess time and read or be read to. There are volunteers that come in from time to time, or staff members that help out and listen or read to students.

In January, the school held an Alice in Wonderland-themed literacy event. There was even a tea party with a special guest: a former student (Emma Perreault) played the Mad Hatter and read a picture book (Alice in Wonderland) to the children in attendance. The book, donated by the English Bookstore in Quebec City, was then put into a draw and won by a student. Participants of the event were able to purchase books that they could then enter into the draw to be given away as well. Additionally, the event raised $130 in donations for the school. The students and their families were very excited to be a part of it all!

This is the first of three themed literacy events for the 2017-2018 school year. Curious about the themes? The students have spoken: The second event will have a Harry Potter theme, and the final one will be a Dr. Seuss event. Everyone is looking forward to them!
