CLC Magic Stories

What happens when schools, families, and communities come together? We call that CLC magic!

LEARN’s Provincial Resource Team (PRT) has gathered CLC magic stories from each school board to share. You will find stories that inspire, touch your heart, or inform you of activities and events that you can recreate in your school community.

BUILDING BONDS

The Club Zone Lachine is the evolution of the youth community centre, a place for today’s children and teens to engage their bodies, minds and spirits. From 3:30 pm to 8 pm daily, adolescents are given a chance to socialize and enjoy a vast array of activities in a couple of classrooms of Lakeside Academy.

BUILDING THE FOUNDATIONS OF SKILLS FOR LIFE!

“Great things come from hard work and perseverance. No Excuses!” - Kobe Bryant

A carpentry program is a great way to offer a hands-on educational experience to students, allowing them to engage in their learning and develop real-life skills while giving back to their community.

JAMES LYNG STUDENTS SCOUR THE 'HOODS FOR STORIES OF THE SOUTH WEST

Maya Angelou's message has gotten through to a group of students at James Lyng. They have spent the last few months scouring the neighbourhoods of St-Henri, Pointe-St-Charles, Little Burgundy, Ville-Emard and Verdun and collecting stories from residents.

ANNUAL BEAN SUPPER 2019

The annual Bean Supper is a festive occasion where all students, their families, and school alumni gather with community members of all ages in a familiar setting: Baie Comeau High School!

The Right Honourable Brian Mulroney and Mila Mulroney attended the event to meet and greet 147 excited participants.

SHOOT YOUR SHOT

With the end of the school year a couple of months away, it came to the CLC’s attention that the graduating class did not have a yearbook for 2018-2019.

Luckily, the Carrefour Jeunesse Emploi du Sud-Ouest had accepted our Shoot Your Shot photography project which would allow for a professional photographer to work with the Secondary 5 students, developing their photography skills & putting together a physical Zine

TALENT SHOW AND TECH CREW

The talent show is one of the best vehicles for parental involvement, even if that involvement is only as audience members. We usually see around 250 parents attend. It highlights the talents of our students and justifies the music program.

BUILDING COMMUNITY AND VITALITY THROUGH BASKETBALL

Fostering a sense of belonging to a community brings meaning to students’ lives, resulting in a community that is healthier both mentally and physically.

Basketball at William Latter was a great way to get students and their families involved in an activity that took place in their school outside of the school day.

THE ART OF SELF EXPRESSION

High school students at Laval Senior Academy (LSA) embarked on a cross-curricular project entitled It’s Complicated in the 2018/19 school year exploring themes of mental health and well-being through the artistic modalities of creative writing (poetry), performance (spoken word) and visual arts (collage -mixed media).

BRIGADES CULINAIRE

The “Brigades Culinaires” was a major triumph for the school and the students involved.  IT was a logistical challenge to get the Brigades underway, vis a vis the equipment needed, but most importantly, finding the right chef to head up the program. This, to me as a CDA, is the key element to making the program a success.

TRAIL CLEANING

This was a partnership lead by our Physical Education Teacher, Felix Lavergne. Just behind LTHS there are hiking trails, maintained by a local organization called “le club de trois raquettes”. Mr. Lavergne entered into a partnership with the aforementioned organization so that in exchange for cleaning the trails, LTHS would be able to use them for free, during fall, winter and spring.

LEADERSHIP AND SELF-DISCOVERY

Peer Advisors. Two words that define leadership and self-discovery. Eight years ago, these concepts created a program about outreach, perseverance, and paying it forward. The school wanted to improve the students’ sense of belonging and relationships, as both are important contributing factors to student engagement and success. A new approach was needed. Joliette High School veered off the beaten path to create The Peer Advisors.
