Making Connections at NRHS

The week before March break is always known to be a bit hectic in every school. Trudy Brown, Community Development Agent (CDA) at New Richmond High School (NRHS), a Kindergarten-to-Grade-11 school in the Eastern Shores School Board, sat down with all of the elementary school teachers in the hopes of alleviating the stress that the week before March break often brings.

"We discussed theme days and activities, as I believed that in order for this week to truly work out, everyone would need to get involved." Initially, they planned on having some outside activities and burning off some energy, but the area was inundated with freezing rain for a day or two preceding the event. The weather made it impossible to do the activities on the playground, as it had transformed into a skating rink.

The alternative was to plan for indoor activities. It went so well, all of the teachers brought their students into the gym for last class of the day, where the children (Kindergarten-Grade 6) were divided into different teams; they had to decide on a team name and logo. Other afternoons included games such as obstacle courses, puzzle making speed races, and a human version of the popular computer game from 1989, Minesweeper. It was fantastic to see the children playing these games and working together to communicate and solve these problems.

As an added element, there were theme days that included Western day, Career Day and Superhero Day. By dressing up, the students earned points for their respective teams. "We had the honour of being interviewed by the local English newspaper, and to our delight, our story about our Winter Carnival made the front page!" exclaimed Trudy.

These activities would not have been possible without the collaboration of all teachers, support staff and students. It was an amazing experience, one that they hope to continue through to the end of the school year.
